Mermaids + Madeleines is a coastal inspired jewelry brand that started as a creative outlet and an Etsy shop for fun. While working in product development in the commercial jewelry industry for 12 years I was able to gain knowledge of materials and skill, but felt creatively unfulfilled. In March of 2020 the company I was working for shutdown. Myself and most of the other employees were let go for about 3 months. During that time I found my love for walks by the water and had the time and space needed to reignite my love for design and art again. Slowly, I was able to turn my creative outlet and Etsy shop, into an online boutique and into a small brand. For me, there's nothing better than creating thoughtfully designed, special pieces for you to wear or give to someone you care about. ACK 4170® was a vision that was created back in 2016. Our website launch was in April 2017 from NJ, and our brick-and-mortar followed in 2018 on Nantucket Island. Nantucket Cane & Clay - Whale Tail Mug & Whale Tail Pitcher

How did your business get started?
I began taking ceramics classes on Nantucket when I was ten, and I learned to weave my first Nantucket Lightship Basket when I was eleven. I come from a family of entrepreneurs (my family runs Nantucket's longest operating sailing charter!) so at an early age I was thinking about how I could turn these hobbies into a business. I came up with the name Nantucket Cane & Clay- clay to represent my ceramic work, and cane to represent my baskets. I began selling my work at the Artists Association of Nantucket's downtown gallery while attending Nantucket High School. In college, I took a break from my art to focus on sailing- but two years after graduating, I decided it was time to get back into the studio! Since then, I've been in business for ~1 year, and it's been a blast. All of my work is now made at a communal studio outside of Boston, but my island home continues to be a source of inspiration. I currently sell my work at the Artists Association Gallery, as well as at Icarus + Co (downtown Nantucket) and on Etsy.

The whale mugs are my most popular product! I came up with the idea in high school, as I wanted to add a nautical touch to a tried and true, highly functional product. I decided to make a few for Nantucket Cane & Clay, and they've ended up being a big hit! I've since expanded my line of whale themed products to also include whale tail pitchers, and offer both blue and white whale tail mugs.
How long does it take to make your work?
It depends! Whale tail mugs are one of my most time consuming ceramic products, given there are so many steps involved. First, I throw the form of the cup on the pottery wheel. Then, I wait for it to reach just the right amount of dry before carefully shaping and adding the handle and tail. Then it's time to fully dry the mug, and fire it in the kiln. Next, I dip the piece in a bright blue glaze, before it receives one final firing. This process takes place over several days, which is incredibly quick compared to making a basket!
